[Basketball] CU hoops to begin NAIA tourneys Wednesday

Tiger fans, put on your dancing shoes. The NAIA National Tournament brackets for Division I Men's and Women's Basketball were announced Wednesday and Campbellsville University's men and women will start things off early in the NAIA's big dance.

The Tiger men will enter the national tournament in Kansas City, Mo., as the No. 9 team in the 32-team field, while the Lady Tigers are a No. 2 seed in the tournament in Jackson, Tenn.

Campbellsville University's impressive season on the women's basketball court is drawing not only national attention for the program but also for its head coach, Ginger Colvin. Colvin has been named the Russell Athletic/WBCA Region 5 Coach of the Year by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) and is a finalist for the Russell Athletic/WBCA National Coach of the Year award for the NAIA.

[Softball] Tiger softball now 9-9 after two losses in Alabama

Campbellsville left 17 runners stranded in two games and went 0-2 on the first day of the three-day Gulf Shores Invitational, hosted by the University of Mobile in Gulf Shores, Ala. The losses level the Tigers' softball record at 9-9.

In a 2-0 loss to Freed-Hardeman, Campbellsville left 12 runners on base and just couldn't get the timely hit. The score was 0-0 going into the top of the seventh when Freed scored both of its runs.

The Tigers rapped out eight singles in the game, one more hit then their opponent. Kasie Vincent had three hits, Emma Napier and Jennifer England two each and Katie Daniel one.

Campbellsville University's Mid-South Conference opener scheduled for Friday at 1 p.m. has been postponed due to weather. Campbellsville was scheduled to host the University of the Cumberlands for a doubleheader Friday and Saturday. The Tigers will open its MSC season now Saturday at noon with a doubleheader against Cumberlands. The other two games will be played Sunday at a time to be announced.

[Men's Tennis] Tigers shut out Centre in tennis opener

Campbellsville University shut out Centre College Wednesday in the first regular season men's tennis match of the season.

"Our guys are really excited to start the season. We've been in the cold weather so long. We have a lot of competitors one through six that can find a way to win even when they don't play their best," CU head coach Kyle Caven said.

Campbellsville University has picked up a left-handed pitcher for 2011, 5-foot-11 junior college transfer Andrew Shoemaker of Boise, Idaho. Shoemaker will transfer to Campbellsville after two seasons at Treasure Valley Community College in Oregon.

Last spring at Treasure Valley, he collected a 3.52 ERA and 3-3 record in 11 games. He struck out 54 through 70 innings worked.

What does Campbellsville University football head coach Perry Thomas have in common with Arkansas' Bobby Petrino and Mississippi State's Dan Mullen? Each coached one of the Top 50 Most Improved Teams of all college football in 2009, according to the California-based sports information company Somis Sports. Only Thomas' Fighting Tigers scored much higher than the two Southeastern Conference schools, ranking at No. 20 overall.

[Softball] Softball Tigers earn split with IUS

Campbellsville managed only six hits in a Wednesday double-header with Indiana University Southeast at Veterans Memorial Park to continue its streak of split twin bills. The Tigers won the first game 3-2 and lost the second 4-1.

In the first game Allison Horton notched the win with plenty of defensive support. The Tigers turned three double plays, one in the fifth with a runner on third. The other two came in the third and fourth frames. Horton gave up seven hits, one in each inning.

Campbellsville rebounded from a game one 1-0 shutout to wrap out 13 hits in a 7-1 game to split its Mid-South Conference opener against the University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday.

After Cumberlands took a 1-0 run in the first inning, the Lady Tigers scored all the runs they would need in the bottom half of the inning. Cassidy Kroeker who gave up two hits in the first, held the Patriots to just two more hits the rest of the way.

[Women's Swimming] Irwin named NAIA Champion of Character

Brenna Irwin, a Campbellsville (Ky.) University sophomore from Louisville, has been honored as the NAIA Champions of Character award winner for women's swimming at a Wednesday evening banquet held prior to the opening of the swim nationals in St. Peters, Mo.

Irwin, according to her coach, Lindsay Hines: "Brenna is a great example of an athlete that gives 110 percent not only in a race, but also at practice ... and does it without ever complaining."

Campbellsville University's men's and women's basketball teams will gather in the Winters Dining Hall on Wednesday, March 10 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. to watch the NAIA Division I basketball selection shows live with the student body. The NAIA men's and women's tournament brackets will be announced on two shows by College Fanz Sports Network. They will be streamed live online at CollegeFanz.com and also televised in Campbellsville on Comcast channel 10 via WLCU-TV4.

Campbellsville Unviersity junior center Whitney Ballinger is one of 29 finalists for the 2010 State Farm Coaches' All-America Team for the NAIA, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced Tuesday. The 29 finalists, who are voted upon by WBCA member coaches in each of the six WBCA geographical regions, are now in the running for selection to the 10-member State Farm Coaches' All-America Team.

The team, along with the National Player of the Year award, will be announced at the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Championship Banquet on March 16, 2010, at the Jackson Civic Center in Jackson, Tenn.

[Baseball] Ponich earns first MSC Baseball Player of the Week honor

Campbellsville University left fielder was named the Mid-South Conference Baseball Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Ponich batted .412 last week with a pair of home runs and five runs batted in. The Kelowna, British Columbia, senior, added 10 runs, two doubles and a triple while helping the Tigers to a 4-3 week.

Corey Prewitt shot a 33 on his last nine holes to finish one under-par with a 71 and lead Campbellsville University in the Rome News-Tribune Invitation Monday in Rome, Ga. Prewitt sits tied for eighth place and is five strokes out of the individual lead in the spring opener.

The Tigers shot a 305 as a team to sit tied for 13^th overall and are four strokes from the Top 10.

[Men's Basketball] CU falls in MSC Final despite Colmenares career high

Campbellsville University senior Nestor Colmenares played like the Mid-South Conference Player of the Year Sunday, scoring a career high 38 points. However, he was unable to overpower tenth-ranked Georgetown College in a 64-61 Mid-South Conference Championship loss at the Frankfort (Ky.) Convention Center.

"Nestor carried us about as far as he could," CU head coach Keith Adkins said. "We asked too much of him today. The bottom line is we didn't get a lot of offensive support other than him. A lot of credit goes to Georgetown College. They defended everyone else well."
