Ryley Whitney earns Mid-South Conference Co-Freshmen of the Year

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — For the fifth time in program history, and second straight, Campbellsville University softball has a Mid-South Conference Freshman of the Year. Ryley Whitney earned Co-Freshman of the Year honors, officials announced at tonight's awards banquet.

Whitney is the fifth Lady Tiger to earn the honor, the second straight and the third in the last four seasons for CU. She joins Kristin Benton (2012), Victoria Decker (2013), Jacqueline Roof (2015) and Tori Humphrey (2017) to earn the award.

"Ryley is one of the best receiving catchers we've ever had," said coach Shannon Wathen. "She works well with our entire staff. Neely (Quint) and Morgan (Gailor) both are totally different pitchers and Ryley never misses a beat catching back-to-back games.

"Not only is she one of the best catchers, she has worked herself into being a run producer in the middle of our lineup. She made a few adjustments once our conference schedule started and has really proven to be the top freshman in the Mid-South Conference. I couldn't be prouder of Ryley and her accomplishments."

From Scottsville, Ky., Whitney has worked herself into being one of the best hitting catchers in the country. She's hitting .361 on the season with three homers, 38 RBI and team-high 15 doubles. The average and RBI totals both rank third on the team.

In conference play, Whitney is hitting .375 with 12 doubles and 20 RBI. In addition, Whitney is hitting .407 with runners in scoring position, .615 with runners on third and less than two outs, and .371 with two outs.

On the defensive side, she didn't commit an error or allow a passed ball behind the plate with 96 chances in conference play. Overall, she finished with only one error on 162 chances and threw out six would-be base stealers.

Whitney joined Lindsey Wilson's Cassie Matlock as the Co-Freshmen of the Year.

The Lady Tigers are scheduled to open the Mid-South Conference Tournament on Friday morning at 11 a.m. ET at Michael O. Buchanon Park. See the link above for the complete game and conference preview story.
