BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Third-seeded Reinhardt mounted a three-run comeback in the ninth inning to upset top-seeded University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma, 7-6, in extra innings to start day two of the Bowling Bracket at Bowling Green Ballpark.
Kaleb Swayze delivered the game-winning single that chopped over the third baseman's head and into left field to score the runner from second base. Swayze went 3-for-5 at the plate and drove in two runs to the Eagles (40-17).
The Drovers (46-7) got off to another fast start with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. With one out, P.J. Garcia singled out to right field and then a double from Kenniel Rivera scored Garcia from first base. Coleton Horner drove in the second run of the ball game with a single up the middle to put the Drovers ahead 2-0 after their first at-bat.
In the second inning, Science & Arts looked to break the game open after it loaded the bases with no outs. However, Jason Gifford worked out of the jam without allowing a run to keep the Eagles deficit at two runs.
The momentum shifted over Reinhardt in the home half of the second inning. The Eagles recorded back-to-back one-out walks and then two singles were split up by a strikeout, double and a hit by pitch, to put Reinhardt ahead, 3-2.
A seesaw battle broke out after Science & Arts tied the score at three with a double play plating a run with runners on the corners and not outs in the third inning.
After three-straight scoreless half innings, the Drovers broke the draw with a sacrifice squeeze bunt down the third-base line from Greg Barnette that drove in Miguel Lorenzo from third base and Garcia moved up to third base on the play as he was running on the pitch. However, Science & Arts left runners on the corners after Gifford got out of the jam allowing just the one run.
Offenses on both sides cooled off as neither team scored until the top of the eighth inning, when the Drovers scored on a wild pitch to grab a 5-3 lead. Then a single from Stevie Thompson made it 6-3 in favor of Science & Arts after eight innings.
Reinhardt was successful on its last ditch effort to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning as it scored three unearned run to the tie the game. Two runs scored on an error by the Garcia at shortstop and then Chandler Wold tied the game with a single out to left field to score a run. The Drovers got out of the inning after the Eagles tried to place runners at first and third, where the lead runner was tagged out at third base.
In the extra frame, Science & Arts left the bases loaded without a scoring run, while the Eagles got the first two runners aboard and then Swayze delivered a chopping single over the third baseman's head to score Daniel Rodriguez and give Reinhardt the 7-6 victory.
The Eagles now move onto the championship game of the Bowling Green on Wednesday at 10 a.m. CT.
