BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Justin Brown,
Jaedin Sklapsky and
Chuck Sharon each won the Mid-South Conference individual titles as Campbellsville placed third overall with 123.5 points on Saturday.
Joining Brown, Sklapsky and Sharon as national qualifiers are
David Sparks and
Jordan Martinez. The trio of Brown, Sklapsky and Sharon also earned First Team All Mid-South Conference honors.
As the top seed in the 141-pound bracket, Sklapsky got the first win of the day with a pin over Marcus Abreau of Life University just 1:12 into the bout. He then earned an 8-0 major decision over Brewton-Parker College's Crofford Helton. Sklapsky punched is ticket to the championship bout after beating No. 16 Trent Leon of University of the Cumberlands in a 12-4 major decision.
In the championship match at 141 pounds, Sklapsky defeated eighth-ranked Mason Calvert in a 10-5 decision to win the conference title.
Brown needed just two wins to earn a spot in the championship of 174 pounds and he did just that. The senior first recorded a 13-3 major decision over Nathan Ferkovich of Southeastern University and then took down No. 20 Brooks Climmons of Brewton-Parker, 6-4. Brown earned his title after he grabbed a late takedown in the final seconds to grab a 3-2 decision victory over No. 8 Colton Gonzalez of Lindsey Wilson College.
Sharon rolled through the 184-pound bracket and pinned his first two opponents heading into the finals. Sharon pinned Max Emerson of Cumberlands 5:56 into his first match and then pinned No. 20 John Olivieri of Cumberland University in 3:46. Sharon earned the conference title at 184 pounds after earning a forfeit win over No. 15 Chris Williams of Southeastern.
Sparks got off to slow start in the 149-pound bracket after falling to Life's Dimitri Alicea in a 5-4 decision to start the day. He rebounded with three-straight wins to place third overall. Sparks pinned Tanner Tidswell of Cumberland and then earned a forfeit win over his teammate,
Michael Diemer. In the match for third place, Sparks had a rematch with Alicea and Sparks earned the win after forcing Alicea into five stalling penalties. With the third-place finish, Sparks an automatic bid to the national tournament.
Martinez earned a fourth-place finish with a 3-2 mark on Saturday. He started with an upset of No. 16 Lucas Nelson of Brewton-Parker via pin, 2:35 into the match. He was then sent into the consolation bracket after a 6-1 loss to No. 5 Olson Delisca of Southeastern – who won the 125-pound bracket.
Once he moved into the consolation round, Martinez defeated No. 15 Chad Lampe of Lindsey Wilson in a 3-1 sudden victory in overtime. Battling for third-place, Martinez was pinned with 36 second left in his match against No. 16 Lucas Nelson of Brewton-Parker. Martinez earned a fourth-place finish after he had already beat Lampe in the consolation bracket and Martinez earned an automatic bid in the national championship with the win by rule.
Kolten Radaz grabbed a fourth-place finish at 133 pounds. He first upset No. 12 Ethan Owen of Southeastern in a 17-5 major decision, but then lost to No. 10 Brady Moser of Lindsey Wilson in a 16-0 tech fall.
During the consolation round, Radaz stayed alive with a 9-3 decision over Brewton-Parker's Immanuel Henderson. Radaz was unable to beat Owen twice after Radaz lost the the third-place match, 4-3. The sophomore placed fourth overall after beating Henderson earlier the 133-pound consolation bracket and won by rule.
Diemer notched the Tigers second fourth-place finish of the night after he went 3-2. He first beat Evan Cole of Cumberland in a 3-1 decision to move to the semifinals. Diemer then suffered a 16-0 technical fall to No. 1 Cam Tessari of Lindsey Wilson to set up an all Campbellsville bout in the consolation bracket.
In the consolation semis, Diemer forfeited to his teammate Sparks before beating Cole once again in a 3-1 decision to move into the fourth-place bout. Against Alicea, Diemer won after a medical default to place fourth.
At 125 pounds,
Michael Beets started the tournament with an upset of No. 15 Lampe of Lindsey Wilson, 4-2, but he fell in the semifinals to top-ranked Hayden Lee in the championship semifinals, 13-3. In the consolation semifinals, Beets was pinned with eight seconds left in his match to drop his second match of the day. Beets' day came to a close following a 4-3 loss to Lampe, in the match to move to the outright fourth-place bracket and finished sixth.
Aaron Rugnao placed sixth in the 133-pound weight class after going 1-3 on the day. He earned an overtime 5-3 win over Josh Parrett of Cumberland, but lost his next three bouts. Rugnao dropped a 14-6 major decision to No. 1 Jake Sinkovics of Cumberlands in the semifinals. He then moved into the challenge bracket after a 4-1 to No. 12 Owen of Southeastern. Wrestling to stay alive, Rugnao lost a 5-3 decision to Brewton-Parker's Immaunel Henderson and placed sixth overall.
After posting an upset to start the day at 285 pounds,
Nate Jackson lost three-straight bouts to end the day and finish sixth. Jackson upset No. 17 Brandon Hill of Life in a narrow 1-0 decision, but in the semifinals of the championship bracket, he went into overtime against Brewton-Parker's Jose Carillo-Garcia. After the bout was tied a three all after all overtime periods, Jackson lost the 3-3 decision after Carillo-Garcia held the edge in ride time.
In the consolation bracket, Jackson lost 4-1 to Tommie Turner of Cumberland to slide into the match to determine sixth place. Facing Hill for the second time, Jackson lost a 3-1 SV-1 contest after a takedown from Hill in overtime and Jackson placed sixth overall.
In the 141-pound weight class,
Jayce Carr (ranked 10th at 141 pounds) started with a major decision win over Lucas McCain of Lindsey Wilson, but then dropped his next two matches. Carr suffered a 9-6 loss to No. 8 Calvert of Life and was upset by Brandon Weber of Cumberland in overtime, 4-2.
L.J. Henderson dropped both of his matches at 165 pounds after he lost to a pair of top 20 opponents. Henderson first suffered a 6-3 setback against No. 16 Matthew Cates of Southeastern and Henderson was disqualified in his match against Lindsey Wilson's Diorian Coleman (ranked fourth at 165 pounds).
University of the Cumberlands won the team title with 143 points and Lindsey Wilson finished second with 138.5 points.
The Tigers now head to Des Moines, Iowa in two weeks for the NAIA National Championships on March 1 and 2.
