CAMPBELSVILLE, Ky. – Campbellsville's women's wrestling team swept the Mid-South Conference Wrestler of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year honors, the conference office released following its inaugural banquet and the first MSC Women's Wrestling Championship this past weekend.
Kayla Miracle was named the MSC Wrestler of the Year, while
McKayla Campbell was selected as the MSC Freshman of the Year. Head coach of the Lady Tigers
Lee Miracle was voted as the MSC Coach of the Year by his peers.
Lee Miracle guided Campbellsville to the Mid-South Conference regular season and tournament championships in the first season the conference sponsored the sport. The Lady Tigers are ranked second in the Women's College Wrestling Association rankings.
"Congratulations to Lee and Nicole and all the Campbellsville women's wrestlers on winning the first ever Mid-South Conference championship in women's wrestling," said Director of Athletics
Jim Hardy. "It is a tribute to their work ethic and passion for competing. Also we are excited for Lee to be named MSC Coach of the Year. There is no doubt that this honor is well deserved and we are very proud of his commitment to building a championship program."
In dual meet action this season, Campbellsville has gone 10-0 overall and they went a perfect 4-0 in the Mid-South Conference duals.
"I was very humbled to receive the MSC Coach of the Year award," said
Lee Miracle. "In truth though, our programs success has much less to do with me. It has everything to do with the support of the administration, hard work of our student-athletes in our program and my assistant coach [
Nicole Woody] for taking care of so many things behind the scenes. I am very blessed to be in a position where I can be surrounded by a tremendous cast of spectacular people all working for the same goals."
Kayla Miracle was named voted as the MSC Wrestler of the Year this season by the conference coaches. Prior to the Mid-South Conference Tournament,
Kayla Miracle finished fifth overall at the Under-23 World Championships in Bydgoszsz, Poland.
This season, she has picked up a 10-4 win at Beat the Streets Los Angeles and she also won the Dave Schultz Memorial Classic. In a month's time, she had beat four world champions and is ranked No. 1 at 136 pounds in the WCWA.
"Kayla is arguably the most valuable wrestler to ever come through the WCWA," said her head coach
Lee Miracle. "Her ability to wrestle so many different weight classes to help the team has been so important to our team's success. She also has the mindset that the team comes first in some situations and she is very willing to sacrifice her personal desires for the greater good of the team. Kayla has wrestled 123, 130, 136, 143 and 155 for us. She typically weighs in at 130 and wrestles the best wrestler on the opposition's team at 130, 136, or 143 pounds because you are allowed to wrestle up two weight classes in the WCWA. That is tremendously valuable to a team in duals."
Campbell – who is her first year at Campbellsville – was selected as the MSC Freshman of the Year after finishing second at 116 pounds at the MSC Championships this past week. Campbell earned a 12-0 technical fall over Life University's Tyesha Topps in the semifinal. In the championship bout, Campbell lost a 12-0 contest to Jennifer Juarez of Life.
"Campbell has done an incredible job all year," said
Lee Miracle. "It is rare that you have a freshman make such a positive impact on a program. McKayla has wrestled 109, 116, and 123 for us in different occasions in order to make us better as a dual team. I was extremely happy to see her get recognized for not only her wrestling abilities, but her unselfishness and willingness to sacrifice herself for the betterment of the team."
Along with sweeping those three awards, the Lady Tigers also placed
Charlotte Fowler,
Koral Sugiyama,
Alexia Foca and
Kaitlyn Hill on the All Mid-South Conference First Team.
Katlyn Pizzo, Campbell,
Steffanie Hampton,
Shelby Hall and
Morgan Becker garnered Second Team All-MSC honors.
Anna Naylor of University of the Cumberlands rounded out the individual honors after being selected as the MSC Champions of Character award winner.
Campbellsville is back in action this Saturday as it hosts the NAIA Invitational to wrap up the 2017 portion of its season.
