CU wins MSC Cheerleading Title for third time in four years

Campbellsville University won the Mid-South Conference Cheerleading Championship Wednesday night for the third time in four years and CU's Vanessa Adkins was Coach of the Year for the second straight year.

It is the second straight title for the Tigers. Campbellsville also won the 2007 and 2009 titles.

The Mid-South Conference is the only league in the country that gives President's Cup points for cheerleading.

"This is the culmination of a lot of hard work," said coach Vanessa Adkins.

Adkins, who appears to have created a dynasty with the Tiger cheerleaders, says winning the first time is tough, but repeating is even tougher.

"You have to set that bar higher each year and challenged the squad to compete. You have to push them a little harder every year.

In addition to the team title, Campbellsville had six girls to receive All-Academic status (minimum of a 3.25 GPA and a sophomore and above). They were: Rachael Sibcy, Alison Medders, Sarah Rose, Danielle Waldrop, Ashley Todd and Jesslyn Long. Twenty-nine student-athletes earned academic all-conference for maintaining at least a 3.25 grade point average on a 4.0 scale and being a sophomore or higher standing.

In addition to Campbellsville's honorees, these cheerleaders also were honored: Cumberlands' Rebecca Franks, Erin Hammond, Rebecca Hatmaker, Whitney Horn, Debra Iles, Kirby Soles, Deavin Stewart, Kirby Wagner and Erin White; Georgetown's Kaitlin Johnson, Morgan Jury, Jamie Pursiful and Katie Reeves; Lindsey Wilson's Korianne Cox, Heather Gordon, Kayla Johnson and Emily Keeton; and Pikeville's Leah Harris, Kayla Hatton, Corey Huston, Randa Newman, Ashleigh Stanley and Ashley West earned academic all-conference.

Ten cheerleaders earned all-conference honors. Campbellsville's Ashley Kirtley and Bethany Gray, Cumberlands' Danni Barton and Deavin Barton, Georgetown's Kaitlin Johnson and Ashton Weis, Lindsey Wilson College's Tiffany Glover and Heather Gordon and Pikeville College's Ashley West and Randa Newman.

CU also had a team in the All-Girl Partner Stunt competition. Competing with the team were Ashley Kirtley, Rachael Sibcy, Laura Campbell, Samantha Vanhoose and Ashley Todd.

A photo gallery will be posted as soon as possible.

University of the Cumberlands finished runner-up in the five-team event while Pikeville College finished third.

Following to the team competition, Pikeville's Heather Banks, Leah Harris, Randa Newman, Samantha Neeley and Taylor Stone won the All-Girl Partner Stunt Competition.

Georgetown's Johnson was selected as the Cheerleader of the Year.

Pikeville's Randa Newman is the Champions of Character recipient. Newman earned the award -- as voted on by the conference athletics director -- for her civic and servant leadership within the campus and community.
