FRANKFORT, Ky. — Campbellsville University athletics was honored multiple times Wednesday but the biggest of them all came from the ones who do the most cheering on the sidelines for others. CU cheerleading swept the entire conference, picking up its sixth MSC Championship and three overall stunt titles.
The night started with the full-team performance and the Lady Tigers hit their routine flawlessly for the overall title.
Georgetown College finished third and two-time defending champion University of Pikeville finished runner-up behind Campbellsville.
"I am so proud of our team and the hard work they have put in this routine," said head coach
Vanessa Adkins. "It means so much to be able to carry on the tradition of this program."
"Congratulations to coach
Vanessa Adkins and her squad for winning the MSC cheer compeition," said CU athletics director
Rusty Hollingsworth. "These student-athletes put in countless hours beginning in August, prior to football season and continuing through basketball season and into their national tournaments in the late spring."
Campbellsville ran away with three other championships on the night: the all girl stunt with
Courtney Drury,
Ashley Bates,
Samantha Walker and
Jordan Sherman; mixed group competition with Drury, Bates, Sherman,
Blake Young and
Daniel DeLeon; and the final championship came from the partner stunt with Bates and
Cody Ford.
"I am also very proud of the stunt group championships," said Adkins. "They put in countless hours of time to prepare and it paid off. I am so proud of their accomplishments."
Bates was a star on the night, being named First Team All-Conference and competing in all stunt groups that was tagged with conference champions. Also, Bates was joined by fellow senior
Morgan Cubert with First Team honors.
Campbellsville placed two more Lady Tigers on postseason teams.
Madison Heiskell andÂ
Kasandra Richerson led the way for CU for Second Team All-MSC honors.
But how can you beat four MSC Championships? Head coach
Vanessa Adkins was named the Mid-South Conference Coach of the Year for the fifth time in eight years to cap off the monumental night.
'Coach Adkins is most deserving of the Coach of the Year award," said Hollingsworth. "She has again shown us that hard work and dedication to your sport creates success. Congratulations to coach Adkins and also the entire cheerleading team."
The cheerleading squad team will continue its season next month, making a fourth consecutive trip to the NAIA National Cheerleaders Association Collegiate Cheer Invitational April 9-10 in Daytona Beach, Fla.
