Rhodes is MSC Freshman of the Year, five others All-MSC

COLUMBIA, Ky. – Six Campbellsville University Tiger wrestlers are All-Mid-South Conference selections, including Freshman of the Year Trey Rhodes, conference officials announced April 30.

Rhodes, a redshirt freshman from Augusta, Ga., led all Tiger wrestlers with 25 wins on the season, posting a 25-12 record to finish seventh in the NAIA at 165 pounds. He entered the NAIA Championships ranked No. 14 in the nation and went 3-2 in the tournament. He dominated Menlo College's Eric Lopez, previously ranked No. 1 in the NAIA, for an 11-3 major decision in the seventh-place match. He was 2-1 in MSC duals action.

Rhodes was also named First Team All-Mid-South Conference, along with fellow redshirt freshman Cody Steiner who finished the season 24-6 and entered the national tournament ranked No. 3 at 125 pounds. Steiner of Waynesville, Ohio led CU with 123 team points and 10 pins.

The All-Conference team was determined by the top finishes at the NAIA East Region championships, with the top finisher in each weight earning First Team honors. The next-best MSC wrestler in the region received Second Team honors.

Campbellsville had four grapplers take Second Team honors: Tyler Alsip (133 pounds), Colby Rinehart (141), Kyle Terry (149) and Shawn McGhee (157).

Alsip, a senior from Cincinnati, Ohio, finished his final season with a 19-11 record, while Rinehart, a senior from Marietta, Ga., was 19-10. Terry, a redshirt sophomore from Elizabethtown, Ky., was 14-5 on the season after missing a good chunk of the season due to injury. McGhee was the only one of the four to finish as an NAIA All-American, placing fifth at 157 pounds with a 22-7 record .

CU also had seven student-athletes recognized as Academic All-Conference selections, the second most in the MSC. In order to be nominated by an institution, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved at least sophomore academic status.
 

 

Campbellsville's Academic All-MSC selections were Raleigh Abbott, Ryu Ballard, Nate Knauf, Rinehart, Steiner, Kyle Sweedman and Joe Whalen.

Campbellsville finished the 2013-14 season, its 10th season in program history, with an NAIA-best 24 dual wins. The 24 wins also matched the national lead for all levels of college wrestling. CU finished 10th in the NAIA Championships.
