Tigers finish fifth in MSC Men's Golf Championships

BARDSTOWN, Ky. – Campbellsville University men's golf saw a 10-stroke difference between fourth and fifth-place slip away Wednesday on the final day of the Mid-South Conference Championships, sponsored by Lee's Famous Recipe of Bardstown.





The Tigers finished fifth in the tournament after its score rose to 319 in the final 18 holes. CU shot 306 and 308 the first two days for a double-digit lead over the University of Pikeville for fourth. UPike closed the gap Wednesday with a 307 to beat pass Campbellsville by two strokes (931-933) in the 54-hole tournament.  

Dalton Olson led CU in the third round with a 77, as did individual Jacob Sims, however it was Lukas Kvaavik that led the Tigers in the tournament, finishing tied for 15th after a 78 in his final 18 holes. Kvaavik shot 78, 75, 78 on the week for a 54-hole score of 231.

Michael Newton finished tied for 21st in the 48-player tournament, shooting 79, 73 and 83 in his three rounds (235), while Dylan Bray tied for 24th with a three-day total of 237 (73, 83, 81). Brandon Collier saw his scores rise each day, shooting 76, 80 and 88 to finish in 24th place with a 244.

Sims was 29th after shooting 84, 74 and 77 (239) as CU's individual entry.

Lindsey Wilson College won the tournament by 19 strokes over University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) after shooting 295 on Wednesday to finish with a 54-hole score of 880 (289-296-295). The MSC Championship win is the Blue Raiders' first since 2007.

No. 17-ranked Cumberlands' had an 899 (292-304-303), while No. 19-ranked Cumberland University (Tenn.) was third with a team total 909 (294-306-309). St. Catharine College (Ky.) finished sixth with a 942 (310-306-326), followed by Shawnee State's (Ohio) 981 (323-328-330), Georgetown's (Ky.) 1,001 (313-343-345) and Bluefield's (Va.) 1,008 (321-345-342) completes the nine-team field.

MEDALIST HONORS

Cumberlands' Michal Pospisil captured medalist honors after making par on the first playoff hole to earn his trip to the national championships as a conference tournament individual champion. Pospisil -- who earned Mid-South Player of the Year and MSC Freshman of the Year honors for his play during the season -- shot a three-round total 1-over par 217 (70-72-75).


Lindsey Wilson's Franck Medale finished runner-up despite climbing four spots of the leaderboard today with a 1-under par 71 to secure his place in the playoff. Medale -- who joins Pospisil as an all-conference first-teamer -- also ended the tournament with a 217 (72-74-71).


ALL-MSC

Following the tournament, conference officials handed out its all-conference honors. The two all-conference teams are based on the three Mid-South sponsored tournaments throughout the year with each individual using his top five scores in the seven rounds.

Joining Pospisil and Medale as first-team all-conference performers is Butler, Cumberland's Austin Garrett and Ryan Botts and Cumberlands' Viktor Madsen and Hugo Asorey. Second team members include, Grabara, Bloom, Cumberland's Zach Johnson and Peyton Broyles, Lindsey Wilson's Federico Navarro and Nathan Hincks, Pikeville's Will Boyd and Shawnee State's Josh Zornes.


Pospisil claimed the player of the year and freshman of the year with the lowest total over the five rounds


Cumberland's Rich Williams was selected Mid-South Men's Golf Coach of the Year by a vote of his peers after leading his team to the regular season championship in 2013-14.

ACADEMIC ALL-MSC

Twenty-two Mid-South Conference men's golf student-athletes earned Academic All MSC honors, conference officials announced on Wednesday.
 

In order to be nominated by an institution, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale and must have achieved at least sophomore academic status.


Campbellsville produced the most men's golf academic honorees from one school with six: Jared Fannin, Cody Goodwin, Tanner Hall, Michael Newton, Matthew Razor and Cody VanMeter.
