WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - Eight Tiger wrestlers advanced to the championship round of the Mid-South Conference Tournament Saturday, helping Campbellsville University run away with its third-straight conference title. The Tigers won four weights (133, 141, 149, 197) and runner-up in three weights (125, 174, 184).
Â
Individual weight class winners and All-Conference wrestlers for the Tigers were
Tim Thurston (133),
Tommy Pretty (141),
Matt Milton (149) and co-champions
Jamelle Jones and
Spencer Adams at 197. Also advancing to the final match in their weight were
Jarvis Elam (125),
Josh Ashbrook (174) andÂ
Allen Scruggs (184).
"It's nice to have eight guys in the finals and win another MSC Tournament championship," CU head coach
Franky James said. "We competed well enough to win the tournament, but I'm not happy with some individual results."
Campbellsville collected 164 team points by placing 15 of its 16 grapplers in the Top 6 of their weight class. That helped the Tigers win the MSC crown by a 22.5-point margin over Lindsey Wilson College (141.5). Cumberland University had 94.5 points, Shorter University had 89.5 and University of the Cumberlands, which leads the MSC duals standings, was fifth in tournament action with 84.5 points.
In addition to 197 pounds, Campbellsville wrestlers met at a crossroad two other times during the day with Tiger meeting Tiger in a round. The first was in the 141-pound semifinal, where
Chris Teague forfeited to
Tommy Pretty. Pretty went on to beat Lindsey Wilson's DaMonte Riley to win the weight by a 13-2 major decision, while Teague finished third.
Next was the third-place match of 157 pounds, as
Conor Young forfeited to
Nick Waldrop. Both Tigers made their way to the semifinals before falling by decision but wrestled back with a pin to reach the all-Campbellsville match.
At 197 pounds, Jones and Adams started the day as the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds and finished as such. Adams had to only record one, a 17-5 major decision in the semifinal, while Jones recorded two pins on the day.
Other Tigers to finish in the Top 6 of their class were
Tyler Alsip (fourth, 133),
DeCoreus Leavell (fifth, 133),
Paul Gryniuk (fourth, 165) and
Travis McIntosh (sixth, 184). Michael Clark also competed in the tournament for CU at 165 pounds.
Following the tournament, Ashbrook was also named the MSC Champion of Character and James was named the MSC Coach of the Year. Academic All-Conference honors went to Ashbrook, Leavell, Young and
Matt David.
Campbellsville returns to action Feb. 4 at home in Gosser Gym to host three teams in dual action: Oklahoma City University, West Virginia Tech and Indiana Tech.
