Wiley named MSC Freshman and Co-Athlete of the Year

WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. —Paxton Wiley has been named the 2016 Mid-South Conference Freshman Track Athlete of the Year and the MSC Co-Athlete of the Year, officials announced after the MSC Championships. 

The two honors are determined by how many points one scores at the MSC meet, as a freshman and then ans an individual.

Paxon, a Radcliff, Ky. native, is a versatile athlete. He competed in the 110 hurdles, 400-meter hurdles, 4x100 relay, 4x400 relay, long jump, triple jump and the high jump.

At the MSC Championships, the Freshman of the year placed Top 8 in seven events. He was the first leg of the 4x100 as they placed second; he also finished second in the 110-meter hurdles, a third place finish in the 400-meter hurdles and fourth place finishes in high jump and long jump. He placed seventh in the 100-meter dash and eighth in triple jump. Ending the day with 35 points to contribute to the Tigers score.  

"Paxton winning Freshmen of the Year and Co-Athlete of the Year is awesome and defiantly well earned," said coach Hilary Lakes. "He performed well in all his events and worked for those awards. I'm happy for him and proud of him."

He earned one MSC Track Athlete of the Week on Monday, April 11 as he posted three Top 5 finishes in the University of the Cumberlands Invitational.

"Paxton has been working extremely hard this season," said Nathelie Zetrenne, sprinter and hurdler coach. "He's come such a long way and it's exciting to see him set goals for himself and achieve them beyond his expectations."

The all-around athlete has qualified for NCCAA in Rome Ga. over the weekend of May 13-14 in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and 110-meter hurdles. Also in the hurdles, he is one of three CU athletes to qualify for the NAIA at the end of May.

"Paxton is one of the most versatile athletes have had here at Campbellsville," said jumping coach George Eskridge. "He not only can do multiple events, but he can do multiple events very well. It is very deserved that he receives Freshman and Co-Athlete of the Year."
