Mangada is Freshman of Year, Preston is Coach of Year in MSC

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The Mid-South Conference announced Campbellsville's Ignacio Mangada was named the Conference Freshman of the Year, while coach Adam Preston earned Coach of the Year honors tonight at National Corvette Museum.

Mangada, a freshman from Alicante, Spain, is the third Tiger to earn the award, as Jamie Allen was named Freshman of the Year in 2010 and Casey Clark was in 2008.

On the season, Mangada leads Campbellsville with 11 goals and has chipped in with one assist for a total of 23 points. Out of the 13 game-winning goals for CU this season, Mangada has five of those - which ranks No. 8 in the NAIA.

"The role of a striker is to put away the opportunities created by teammates," said Preston. "Nacho (Mangada) has done that extremely well this year. He has had great players working hard to put him in the right situations. I'm proud of him and look forward to seeing his continued growth in his time at CU."

Preston, who is in his 14th season at Campbellsville, earns his fourth MSC Coach of the Year honor and picks up back-to-back awards for the first time.

Preston has built the program from the ground up by cumulating an overall record of 144-99-14 (.587) and winning back-to-back MSC regular seasons – the first two in program history.

In addition, Preston led the Tigers to the program's first NAIA National Tournament appearance with the first NAIA Tournament win in the Opening Round over West Virginia Tech last season.

"I am extremely honored to be given this award by my fellow coaches of the Mid-South Conference," said Preston. "I have an outstanding assistant in Alex Adams that spends most of his time fixing my mistakes and making me look good. He is one of the best coaches I have ever met and I am grateful for every season he gives us before he has his own team and starts winning championships of his own. Additionally we have a fantastic group of guys that any coach would be ecstatic to work with and that continually make me look better than I am."

This season, Campbellsville has accumulated a 13-0-2 record and is riding a 31-match undefeated streak, dating back to the 2015 season. The Tigers are 27-0-4 during this span going into this week's MSC Tournament.

"Congratulations to Adam for being named the MSC Coach of the Year," said director of athletics Rusty Hollingsworth. "Adam is a fantastic head coach that has built a great soccer program for our university. He is a hard worker and works tirelessly at recruiting and retaining quality student-athletes. I appreciate the way Adam cares for his players and is as concerned about their academic, physical and spiritual wellbeing as he is their ability to play soccer."

In addition to Mangada and Preston, Matt Farthing earned the Champions of Character award from the MSC (see separate story on Farthing).

Campbellsville also had a strong showing on the All-Conference teams boasting nine student-athletes all together – the most from all teams. In addition to Mangada, Gonzalo Sapena, Nathan Heath, Daniel Nimmo, Alex Higdon and Ross Lindsay all earned First-Team honors.

Gabriel DeFreitas, Pak Hei Chan and Diego Morales earned Second-Team honors. The All-Conference selections were voted on by the coaches.

CU also had five student-athletes earn Academic All-MSC honors – Farthing, Heath, Antonio Moreira, Jack Murray and Alan Yoshida (see separate story linked above for complete information on Academic awards).

Lastly, Lindsey Wilson's Aleksi Pahkasalo was named the MSC Player of the Year.
