In order to help you better understand you responsibilities and the processes involved in Athletic Injury claims, a list of commonly asked questions and their respective answers are outlined below. Please feel free to contact the Athletic Training Department if further questions or needs arise.
What is Secondary Athletic Insurance?
Secondary athletic insurance is similar to your own primary health insurance. It is a policy to help defray the costs of medical expenses. Campbellsville University has purchased a secondary athletic insurance for its student-athletes. This policy is excess insurance only. This insurance covers costs that are in excess of what your primary insurance does not cover.
What if I do not have primary insurance for my son/daughter?
In order to participate in athletics at Campbellsville University, your son/daughter must have a health insurance carrier. If you do not currently have a carrier, the University can provide you with insurance options for your child. Please contact the Athletic Training department for more information at 270-789-5172. If your child does not have a primary insurance carrier by the time participation in athletics begins, he/she will be ineligible to participate with their athletic team. Campbellsville University is not responsible for medical bills for athletes participating without insurance.
Is coverage guaranteed?
As with all insurances, coverage is never guaranteed. Coverage of an athletic injury will only be guaranteed once all medical documentation has been filed, reviewed, and then approved through the athletic insurance company, currently, K & K Insurance Group, Inc.
What is not covered by this insurance policy?
How long does coverage last?
The coverage has a two (2) year benefit period. So if a student-athlete is injured on September 1, 2010 the coverage will be good until August 31, 2012. Any bills incurred after that date would become your responsibility.
Once an injury has occurred, how do I file the claim/bills?
Campbellsville University's Athletic Trainers will submit the claim. Once submitted you will receive a letter from the Athletic Insurance Coordinator at the University, follow the directions outlined in the letter to help complete the claim. If this is not done, this may cause the claim to be denied and benefits to not be paid out.
What is an EOB?
EOB stands for Explanation of Benefits. It is a statement that your insurance company uses to explain what charges were covered and/or denied for a particular date of service. Once a claim is filed your insurance company will send you an EOB for all the services provided.
What is an Itemized Statement?
An itemized statement or HCFA is a detailed charge for each item that makes up the total bill. A statement that only shows a "total charge" is not acceptable to process a claim. The provider will send a statement then you will need to call the provider and ask for a HCFA form or itemized statement.
Campbellsville University is not responsible for accounts that are in collection. It is the athlete and/or parents responsibility to provide all information in a timely manner as to avoid collections. Letters regarding the student's injury and bills will be mailed periodically to keep you updated on the claim process.
