Dick Butkus
One
of the nation's greatest linebackers is the next hard hitting act lined up to
raise support for Campbellsville University's $1.2 million More Than a
Game campaign that is bringing synthetic turf to the Tigers' football field and
lights to the football and baseball stadiums.
NFL Hall of Famer Dick Butkus will be the speaker at a fund-raising dinner
Friday, April 16 at 6:30 p.m. Cost is $35 per person and $60 per couple. An
autograph memorabilia auction will follow the dinner.
Butkus will also participate in the annual Big Maroon Club Golf Scramble on
April 17 at the Campbellsville Country Club. Two spots to join Butkus' team in
the four-man scramble will also be auctioned at the Friday dinner. A former Chicago Bear, Butkus was an eight-time All-Pro selection and two-time
NFL Defensive Player of the Year. His No. 51 jersey was retired by the Bears as
well as his No. 50 University of Illinois Fighting Illini jersey. He collected
1,020 tackles in his NFL career and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of
Fame and College Football Hall of Fame. In 1985, the Dick Butkus Award was
created and is given annual to the most outstanding linebacker at the high
school, college and professional levels.
Butkus will be the third celebrity to come to Campbellsville this year to help
fund-raise for the More Than a Game campaign. "We Are Marshall" head coach Jack
Lengyel kicked off the campaign on Sept. 26, 2009, and Country Music legend
Vince Gill will hold a benefit concert for campaign March 26 at CU's Ransdell
Chapel. The more than 800-seat concert sold out in early March.
Tickets for the Butkus dinner can be made through the Campbellsville Office of
Development by calling 270-789-5211.
