Campbellsville University dominated the awards at the Mid-South Conference women's basketball awards Wednesday night at the conference's annual banquet. Headlining the night were Campbellsville juniors and 1,000 Point Club members Whitney Ballinger and Courtney Danis, along with CU head coach Ginger Colvin.
Ballinger, one of 10 women named to the MSC All-Conference team, is the MSC Women's Basketball Player of the Year, while Danis is the MSC Champion of Character. Colvin was named the MSC Women's Basketball Coach of the Year for the second straight year.
"Whitney was the hands-down choice and I hope she gets some consideration for NAIA Player of the Year as well," said Colvin. "It was an honor well deserved."
Colvin said her team has a ton of kids who could have been nominated as the league's Champion of Character, but that her junior forward just stood out.
"It's fitting that she gets that honor," said Colvin. "She has bought in to the team concept so well after the arrival of Whitney (Ballinger), especially since she was our leading scorer."
But Colvin was quick to point out that no individual award is reachable without a team.
"Our team isn't a one-man show. We have a ton of talent on the floor with Whitney. Our starting five were all (high school) region Players of the Year."
On her own award: "If you are looking for a recipe for a championship team you could start with us. Miranda (assistant coach Miranda Denney) could be a head coach on any team in the conference. She does all the dirty work and provides so much desire and love that our players feed off that."
Ballinger
ranked in the conference's top-two in six individual categories. She
ended the regular season second in scoring (21.5 points per game),
rebounding (11.6), field goal percentage (51.6 percent), and steals per
game (2.4). She led the conference in double-doubles (19) and block
shots per game (3.6).
Beyond
the conference, Ballinger ranked in the NAIA's top-five in scoring,
rebounding, blocks and double-doubles. Her 19 double-doubles led the
nation.
The
Carrollton, Ky., native, earned MSC Player of the Week honors a record
nine times and NAIA National Player of the Week on three occasions.
Ballinger and Danis were joined on the All-Conference team by University of the Cumberlands senior Stephanie
Quattrociocchi and sophomore Lauren Wombles, Georgetown College
freshman Kourtney Tyra, Lindsey Wilson junior Viktoria Krell, Pikeville
College junior Natiera Hinton, University of Rio Grande juniors Leah
Kendro and Jenna Smith and West Virginia University Tech junior Shyla
Jones.
Tyra
was selected as MSC Freshman of the Year by the league coaches after
leading the Tigers in scoring and assists. The McKee, Ky., native,
averaged 12.4 points and 3.8 assists per game.
Danis earned the Champion of Character award -- as voted on by the conference athletics director --
for her civic and servant leadership within the campus and community. She is part of a leadership team that began a student-athlete Bible study on campus. Danis and the group have a mission of reaching out to others.
Colvin was selected by her peers as MSC Coach of the Year. She led the Tigers to their second straight MSC regular season title
and the first undefeated MSC record (14-0) in the league's history.
Campbellsville finished the regular season with a 29-1 overall record.
