Looking Back at 2009

Summer - Campbellsville receives commitments from 91 incoming players
Sept. 5 - CU wins its first season opener since 2004, beating Cumberland University on the road, 38-37 with more than 500 yards of total offense.

Sept. 10 - The Tigers traveled to NCAA Division II opponent Carson-Newman College on a Thursday night, falling, 38-10, to the perennial national power. A number of players remained in East Tennessee the following day to read to elementary school and middle school students in Pigeon Forge.

Sept. 19 - During the season's home opener at Finley Stadium, CU held No. 10 Lambuth University to one of its lowest offensive performances of the season in a 28-13 loss.

Sept. 26 - Campbellsville silenced the No. 8 offense in the NAIA to win its Mid-South Conference East Division opener, 16-6, over West Virginia University Tech. Freshman running back Dy'lan Underwood made his debut with 120 yards on 19 carries. Prior to the game, former Marshall University head coach and legend Jack Lengyel was honored by CU for his commitment to the future of Campbellsville's program. He served as keynote speaker the night before at a dinner to kick off a $1.2 million fundraiser campaign for synthetic turf and lights at the Finley Stadium.

Oct. 1 - CU knocked off No. 10 Shorter College, 42-28, on a Thursday night national stage as the CollegeFanz.com NAIA Game of the Week. Harold Small returned a 100-yard kickoff return to be named the Mid-South Conference and NAIA Specialist of the Week. It was CU's first win over a Top 10 team in more than five years. Quarterback Nathan Cooper was named the CollegeFanz Player of the Game.

Oct. 5 - Campbellsville received votes in the NAIA Top 25 poll for the first time this season, the same day CU legendary coach and football patriarch Ron Finley passed away from illness. Hundreds of former players and friends of CU turned out for his funeral service on campus Oct. 8.

Oct. 10 - The Fighting Tigers finished one point shy of a homecoming victory, falling 32-31 to the University of Virginia at Wise. CU displayed a "RF" helmet decal in memory of Coach Ron Finley and also wore a pink ribbon through the month of October to raise awareness of breast cancer.

Oct. 17 - Campbellsville rallied from 13 points down to escape Jackson, Miss., with a 21-20 victory over MSC West Division leader Belhaven College. Calvin Mann caught a touchdown pass with 5:41 to play to set up an onside kick and game-winning touchdown by the Tigers minutes later. Dy'lan Underwood dove over center with seconds left for the win and to move CU to 3-3 on the season. The win moved CU back into the receiving votes category in the NAIA Top 25.

Oct. 24 - CU won back-to-back games for the first time since 2004, returning home to knock off No. 24 Georgetown College. Calvin Bini tipped away a potential game-tying touchdown as time expired to secure the Tigers first win over their rival since 1997 and only the fourth in program history. Bini's performance earned him Mid-South Conference Defender and Specialist of the Week honors.

Oct. 26 - Campbellsville broke into the Top 25 for the first time in a while, ranking at No. 24 after the upset of Georgetown College.

Oct. 30 - Campbellsville fell on the road to three-time MSC East champion University of the Cumberlands, 21-6.

Nov. 7 - The Tigers turned a 20-3 deficit into a 31-29 victory over Union College to close its home season on Senior Day. Jeffery Demary was named the Mid-South Defender of the Week for his 16 tackles in the game. The win secured a winning season for CU, its first since 2004, moving them to 6-4.

Nov. 14 - CU closed the year with its seventh win and secured a second-place finish in the Mid-South Conference East with a 31-17 win over Pikeville College.
