Four defensive stars for Campbellsville University have been named an All-Conference selection by the Mid-South Conference football coaches. Junior defensive back Calvin Bini of Radcliff, Ky., headlines the group, being selected as a defensive back, kick returner and named the MSC Champion of Character.
Those joining Bini on the All-Conference team are defensive linemen Henri Baynham-Baker and Sherman Williams and linebacker Trey Mayes. Offensive lineman Alex Zimmerman, wide receiver Harold Small and defensive back Calvin Hicks were all selected as MSC East Honorable Mentions.
"It's good to see our players receive recognition for the season they have had. These selections reflect how other coaches in the conference view our program now. Last year we finished 90th in the country in defense and this year we're around 28th. The improvements that are being made in the program are not only in our record book or conference, but on the national scene. This shows you how the program is growing," CU head coach Perry Thomas said.
Bini finished the regular season second in the NAIA for punt return yards with 376 and 18th in yards per return, averaging 11.8. He also led the Tigers with interceptions, picking off three for the season and was second in pass break-ups with six.
Trey Mayes, a junior from Cleveland, Tenn., led the CU defense with 60 assisted tackles and 88 total. His 11 tackles for a loss is second on the team for a combined loss of 45 yards. Six of those were sacks, adding up to 39 yards for a loss. He also had one fumble recovery.
Baynham-Baker, a sophomore from Elizabethtown, Ky., finished fifth in total tackles with 52. He had two sacks on the year and one safety.
Williams, a senior from Louisville, Ky., led the Tigers with three fumble recoveries. He had two sacks, six tackles for a loss and 41 total take downs.
Hicks, a freshman from Ft. Myers, Fla., picked off his first pass in the final game of the season, saving a Pikeville touchdown. He led the Tigers with 10 pass break-ups and had 35 tackles.
Small, a freshman from Brunswick, Ga., was twice named the Mid-South Special Teams Player of the Week and once the NAIA Player of the Week during the season, starting at wide receiver and kick returner. Small ranked in the Top 50 in the NAIA in total receptions (47), total kickoff return yards (427), total receiving yards (688) and was No. 10 in kickoff return yards per attempt, averaging 26.7.
Zimmerman, a freshman from Louisville, Ky., started at right guard for the Tigers and had two tackles against Pikeville.
In addition to those being selected to the All-Conference Team or honorable mention, AJ Brown, Karl Charles, Nathan Cooper, Winston Harbison, Vedad Hazikadunic, David Hon, Tyler Jackson, Lincoln Lawless and Blake Robbins were named scholar-athletes. The distinction is reserved for student-athletes with a sophomore or higher class standing and a 3.25 and above grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
CU finished the season with its best record since 2003 at 7-4.
