Campbellsville University's football season officially came to an end Sunday when the final NAIA Coaches' Poll was released, ranking the Fighting Tigers No. 27.
CU was holding an outside hope it would be able to extend its 7-4 season into the postseason, but finished just on the outside. In order to advance to the NAIA 16-team playoff, CU had to either win the Mid-South Conference East Division or finish in the Top 20.
"We're disappointed we didn't do enough to get in that Top 20
to be considered with the playoffs, but we're happy with the season we've had," CU head coach Perry Thomas said.
"We started the year at No. 67 and finished tied for 27. We're excited about the
improvement we've made, and we're going to continue to take this program
forward next year."
Campbellsville is tied in the final poll with Black Hills State University (S.D.) with five points each. Georgetown College finished No. 26 with seven points, while Mid-South West champion Lambuth University is No. 6 and MSC East winner University of the Cumberlands is No. 10.
Campbellsville (7-4) was also hoping for a chance to play in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Victory Bowl, where the Top 2 NCCAA teams meet. But CU finished third behind NCAA Division III schools Greenville College and Geneva College, who will meet in the Victory Bowl on Nov. 21.
The Tigers conclude the season tied as runner-up in the Mid-South East Division and with its best record since winning nine games in 2003. Campbellsville's four losses came to Lambuth and Cumberlands, who both advance to the NAIA playoffs, the University of Virginia at Wise and Carson-Newman College, who advanced to the NCAA Division II playoffs as the seventh-ranked team in the nation.
