Campbellsville's Volley Tigers worked their way in the finals of the
conference tournament with an impressive 3-0 victory over Rio Grande
Wednesday afternoon in Frankfort.
"We had a few funky moments in the second game, but all-in-all I think we played pretty good," said coach Randy LeBleau.
Senior Renee Netherton picked up double-digit kills in the game with 11
and got solid support from eight kills each by Whitney Haynes and
Shannon Cahill. Netherton also had 29 total attack points and Cahill 27.
Caitlin Dresing led the team in digs with 18, followed by 13 from Haynes and 11 by Caroline Martin. Martin also had 38 assists. Christina Sindelar blocked four shots and got a big point in the third game that sent CU on its way.
Leading 12-9 in the third game, the Lady Tigers went on runs of four and nine points to put the match away.
The win pushed Campbellsville to 30 wins on the year and an overall record of 30-12.
The Lady Tigers never trailed in the first game extending leads of 12-9, 18-12 and 24-15 before finally hammering out a 25-17 win.
In game two, Campbellsville fought back to finally tie the score at 19-all and won six of the game's final nine points.
"There was a little high anxiety in the second game and that's why I called a couple of early timeouts to assure them that the game goes to 25 points," said LeBleau. "When we can control our own personalities and not worry about anyone else, we do OK."
Campbellsville will find itself in the finals at 6:00 against the winner of the Georgetown-Lindsey Wilson match.
If they should play Georgetown in the finals it will pit the top and runner-up conference teams.
"We can't give up the big runs. That been our undoing," said LeBleau.
