Ramiro Sanchez
For the first time this season,
Campbellsville University has swept the men's soccer Mid-South Conference
Player of the Week awards as Ramiro Sanchez and James Clements both received
honors.
Sanchez, a sophomore forward from
Cali, Columbia, netted three goals on the week to earn the Mid-South Conference
Offensive Player of the Week award. His first two came in the second half to
bring the Tigers back from a 2-1 deficit to beat No. 22-ranked University of
the Cumberlands, 3-2, for the first time ever.
Sanchez went on to score a goal
against St. Catharine to move into a tie for third place on the Mid-South
Conference scoring list with eight goals. Sanchez has scored five of his eight
goals in the past three games, putting CU on a three-game win streak.
"There's an adjustment period always
for those (internationals) coming in. Ramiro's really stepped up and been courageous
and brave, and that's all you can ask for a forward," CU head coach Adam
Preston said. "We've been asking him to play more of a target man, but he's been
a beast on set pieces."
Clements collected eight saves in a
pair of conference wins last week to earn MSC Defensive Player of the Week. The
Lebanon, Ky., sophomore goalkeeper stopped six shots in the Tigers' win over
Cumberlands and followed with two saves against St. Catharine. He is second in
the conference with 56 saves this season.
James Clements
"This whole season, in the low
points, he's been what's kept us going and in the high points he's been a great
leader, Preston said of Clements. "He's been making huge saves the past few
games. He's a dream to coach."
