Campbellsville University Lady Tiger coach Ginger Colvin thinks she found a player flying under the basketball radar in Graves County High School's Kayla Hopkins.

"We got onto her late," Colvin said, "but I think we've found a good, solid prospect."

Hopkins, according to Colvin, is not flashy, but has a solid floor game, can create and gets other players involved. She's also a great student, according to Colvin.

"She's just what we need."

Hopkins, a left-hander, capped off an excellent senior campaign by being named The Mayfield Messenger's Third District co-Player of the Year in a vote of district coaches and was also was named to The Paducah Sun's All-Purchase team.

Hopkins was also selected as one of five members of the All-Froggyland team. As a senior, she averaged 16.8 points and 4.7 assists per game.

"We got this packet in the mail, and we didn't really know what it was, but the longer we looked at it the better we understood and the better we liked her," Colvin said. "That area of the state isn't recruited that heavily."

Hopkins, 5-7, scored a career-high 36 points against Hickman County in this year's regional tournament. She has scored 889 points in her career and established four school records - career assists (469), single season assists (294), single game assists (16) and most free throws made in a game (19).

As a freshman, Hopkins will be joining fellow recruits Mackenzie Lee (Montgomery County) and Hayley Hellyer (Boyle County), along with virtually everyone off a 26-7 team that won the regular season Mid-South Conference and played in the NAIA National Tournament.
