CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. -Kyle Caven is using a youth movement in an effort to put Campbellsville University on the tennis map. With 80 percent of his men's and women's rosters speckled with freshmen and sophomores, Caven has his women at 2-7 and his men at 6-3 at this point in the season.
"We're really young," acknowledged Caven. "The guys have done really well and our women are coming around."
Both teams won matches on Wednesday against Brescia, with the women winning 6-3 and the men 7-2.
Caven said his men's team is ranked just outside the top 30 of NAIA tennis teams, anchored by players from Venezuela, Mexico and Bolivia.
The women, who by the admission of their coach, have played some good individual matches, but have struggled putting together a good team match.
The teams get back on the court April 14 when they travel to Lindsey Wilson.
Against Brescia, Caven said a pair of Liberty, Ky. players, Meredith Coffey and Allison Overstreet, won both their singles matches.
In men's doubles against Brescia the teams of Luis Morett and Pablo Numbela, Gustavo Valecillo and Angel Marquez and Terry Caven and Zac Malyon won their matches 8-4, 8-4 and 8-3, respectively.
Morrett shined in singles, winning 7-5, 7-5. Numbela and Valecillo both lost three-set matches.
