KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Campbellsville University wrestling closes out the 2011-12 regular season with the same rank it began, No. 2 in the NAIA Top 20 Coaches Poll. It's the final ranking prior to next week's NAIA National Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
"There is one more ranking that comes out after the tournament. That is the only ranking we care about. As long as we are No. 1 when the tournament is over we'll be happy," said CU head coach Franky James.
The Tigers hold on to their No. 2 spot with the help of 10 individual rankings, including No. 1 spots for Tim Thurston at 133 pounds and Jamelle Jones at 197 pounds.
CU narrowed the gap between first and second by gaining 107 points in the Feb. 22 poll, only 26 points behind No. 1 Grand View (Iowa), who is also the host team for the national tournament.
"Grand View is the favorite next week, and all the pressure is on them going into the tournament. Because of the draws and placement in the brackets they will need to wrestle a near perfect tournament to win the title. We have our team together and feel great about our position going into the tournament," James said.
One reason James feels confident about his team's chances in Iowa is because of their success Saturday, Feb. 18 in the NAIA East Qualifying Group Tournament, claiming first place as a team with six individual champions.
"Our plan going in to the qualifier tournament was to get as many region champs as we could and put our team in a great position in the national tournament brackets. I feel like that will be the difference at this tournament," James said. "Other teams chose to hold guys out of the national qualifier tournaments and not compete for different reasons. I have seen that happen in the past and it never pays off."
Campbellsville will enter the NAIA national tournament with six No. 1 seeds, two No. 2 seeds, two No. 3 seeds, a No. 4 seed and one un-seed grappler.
At 133 pounds, Thurston will sport the No. 1 seed and sophomore Tyler Alsip will have a No. 3 spot after claiming third in the qualifier Saturday. The weekend success helped Alsip return to the 133-pound rankings at No. 12 after a long absence.
At 141 pounds, Chris Teague held his position at No. 5 in the rankings after winning the East Region title Saturday with a 3-1 decision over teammate Tommy Pretty, who dropped two spots to No. 6 in the final regular season poll. The ranking marks the 27
th of Pretty's career -- a CU record.
At 149 pounds, Matt Milton slid out of the rankings after posting six straight weeks in the Top 12 for the weight. He will enter the national tournament as a No. 4 seed though.
Connor Young shot up five spots at 157 pounds to his highest career ranking of No. 2 after beating the previous No. 2 and No. 5 at last week's East Region tournament. Young, who has now appeared in 12 consecutive 157-pound rankings, will enter the NAIA National Tournament as a No. 1 seed. Joining him at 157 pounds is Nick Waldrop, who fell two spots to No. 10 after finishing third in the qualifier.
Josh Ashbrook and Allen Scruggs remain ranked in the 174-pound and 184-pound rankings for the seventh straight time this season. Ashbrook slid one spot to No. 7 at 174 pounds, despite winning the East Region, while Scruggs returned to the Top 5 at 184, moving up four spots from No. 9 after his East Region title. Both will be No. 1 seeds in Iowa.
At 197 pounds, Spencer Adams is ranked for the 22
nd consecutive poll of his career, holding strong at No. 4 after losing to Jones in the East Region final. He will be a two-seed at nationals.
Campbellsville will depart Tuesday, Feb. 28 for the NAIA National Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. Competition will be March 1-3 at the Jacobson Exhibition Center.
"This tournament is going to be a dogfight, and it could be decided by a few points," James said. "Positioning at the starting line might make a big difference, and we like our position."
