Angel Marquez was a 6-4, 6-0 winner in singles
CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. - Both the CU men's and women's tennis teams blanked Asbury 9-0 Tuesday, the men now at 2-0 and the women evening their record at 1-1.
The teams were never seriously headed, with the closest match of the day coming in No.-3 men's doubles when Angel Marquez and Filip Pavlovic won 8-4. Carlos Anton and Pablo Numbela, playing No.-1 doubles, won 8-2, and at No. 2 Terry Caven and Zac Maylon won 8-2.
Numbela, from Bolivia, and Anton, a junior from Madrid, Spain, won their No. 1 and 2 singles matches 6-0, 6-1; 6-0, 6-0, respectively. Pavlovic (6-1, 6-0), Marquez (6-4, 6-0), Malyon (6-0, 6-2), and Phillip Carlisle (6-0, 6-1), also won their men's singles matches.
The women won their doubles matches 8-0, 8-1 and 8-1. Paired together were Tanya Murtagh, a freshman from Dublin, Ireland, and Anita Henestrosa, a sophomore from Switzerland; Gleidys Salazar, Caracas, Venezuela, and Stacey Drew, Lancaster, Ky.; and Aspen Edwards, Edmonton, Ky., and Kristen Hamrick, Lawrenceburg, Ky.
In women's singles the six women dropped only three games between them. Murtagh (6-0, 6-0), Henetrosa (6-0, 6-0), Salazar (6-1, 6-0), Edwards (6-0, 6-1), Hamrick (6-0, 6-1) and Drew (6-0, 6-0) all posted wins.
Both squads will use the beginning of spring break to play in the Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) Invitational March 12, 12 and 13. They will host University of the Cumberlands on Tuesday, March 15 at 11 a.m. and then go out on the road to Lee, Covenant and Tennessee Wesleyan on March 18 and 19.
