University women's soccer coach Thom Jones is hoping a pair of preseason
competitions will be what his team needs to start the 2010 season with a
victory. The Lady Tigers were held scoreless in their first of two preseason
scrimmages Saturday, as Thomas More College visited Finley Stadium, but Jones
considers the result similar to the start of 2009. "Last year, we played Milligan College first game and lost 6-1 after no
scrimmages. That woke us up and we went on to the Asbury tournament, won it and
kicked off a good run," Jones said. "This is an eye-opener and we have another good
scrimmage Tuesday at Centre College"
Jones called Saturday an eye-opener for his team, who has been scrimmaging only
against reserve players so far this fall.
"We were able to do some things we haven't been able to," Jones said. "You come
out here against a first team (Thomas More) of this caliber, we aren't used to
pressure. They were pressuring and we were panicking and just kicking the ball,
but at halftime we made some adjustments and played a good second half. We
played physical, we won 50-50 balls, we played more offensively."
With one week remaining before the Lady Tigers' opener, Jones said if his team
wins 50-50 balls and plays with tight pressure, it will be OK.
