Saturday's
men's soccer scrimmage against Thomas More College did exactly what
Campbellsville University head coach Adam Preston wanted it to do - work out
some nerves and show what the team needed to work on. "We've got a lot of young guys and guys that haven't played at this level
before," Preston said. "The speed was a shock for them and they were a little
nervous early but they settled down by the second half. We're going to have to
fix some little things but that's what this game was for."
Kyle Thomas, a freshman from Vine Grove, Ky., started in goal for the Tigers
with senior James Clements sitting out. His only goal allowed was in the 29th
minute.
"For having to step in as a freshman, I thought Kyle did excellent. He's
proving to be a capable backup and may even push James by the end of the
season," Preston said.
Thomas, who is competing for a place kicker spot on the football team, is also
projected to start the Tigers' soccer opener Friday, Aug. 27 against
Freed-Hardeman University at 8 p.m.
"The football team's been great working with us. I can't be more complementary
of the coaches and Coach (Perry) Thomas. He's been nothing but a class act
since he got here," Preston said. "Kyle's missed some running practice, but he's
been doing a lot of kicking which is fun for a keeper."
While the Tigers were held scoreless in the event, Preston said he was pleased
with the team's attitude as they enter the final week of preseason.
