Campbellsville University has signed its three final recruits for 2011, all junior college transfers, including 2008 Pittsburgh Pirates draft pick Kevin Komstadius.
Komstadius comes to Campbellsville from Columbia Basin Community College in Washington.
The 6-foot-5, 230-pound, left-handed first baseman grew up in Yakima, Wash., and prepped at East Valley High School. A four-year letter winner, Komstadius was a captain from his sophomore through senior seasons. As a first baseman and pitcher, he led the Red Devils to the state championship game and runner-up finish in 2008, hitting .467 with 10 home runs and 50 RBIs. That senior season led to being named league MVP and being selected for the state's all-star game. After winning three league titles and being a three-time all-league selection, he was named the No. 8 prospect in
the state of Washington by Baseball Northwest during his senior season.
That caught the eyes of pro scouts, as he was selected in the 29th round of the Major League Baseball First Year Players Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He passed on pro ball to sign with the University of Washington.
"We are extremely fortunate to sign Kevin, and I actually can't believe
he was still available so late into the spring. He is a great pick up
for us. Kevin is 6'5, left handed and can play first base, outfield and is also going
to see time on the bump for us next year. He is a tremendous kid, loves
to compete and is really a humble person despite an outstanding
baseball resume. It's great to add another left handed stick to the
line up and a left handed arm to the bullpen, plus he is really solid
defensively. Kevin is going to add a tremendous amount to the program," said CU assistant coach Chris Lewis
Being drafted by a MLB team runs in the Komstadius blood. Kevin's father Kirk was an All-American first baseman at Lewis-Clark State College after transferring from Yakima Valley College in 1979. In 1978, he was selected as a fourth-round pick by the Seattle Mariners in their second MLB draft as a franchise. The following year, the Oakland A's took Kirk in the sixth-round.
Colton Brown - Tacoma Community College
Brown comes to the Tigers from Tacoma Community College. He was a graduate of Auburn High School where he was a three-year letter player and was on first team all-league his junior and senior years. He then went on to spend his freshmen and sophomore years of college playing for TCC, where was first team all-league both years. His freshmen year, he went for seven wins and two losses with an ERA of 1.77 having 74 strikeouts, 19 walks and 33 hits. His sophomore year , he went for eight wins and two losses with an ERA of 2.05 having 67 strikeouts, 41 walks, and 39 hits.
"Signing Colton is absolutely a big time sign for us, we starting recruiting him last September but we had expected him to go DI. He had a handful of offers but things worked out where he was still available at the end of the year. He should be in our rotation and will definitely make an immediate impact on the staff. He has a very live arm and does a great job commanding his off speed stuff. One of the things I like most about Colton is his passion and excitement for the game. And never to be forgotten is his attitude; he is a great team guy, is very humble and will be a difference maker right away."
Drew Pettit - Lower Columbia College
 |
Pettit comes to CU from Lower Columbia College in Longview, Wash. He graduated high school in Castle Rock, Wash., where he played all four years under the direction of Coach Jason Mackey. His senior year he pitched 30 innings with 66 strike outs, 13 walks, and 8 hits. He finished his senior year with an ERA of 0.47. He was All Tri-Co League First Team pitcher for two years and All Tri-Co Second Team pitcher for one. His senior year he was All-State first team pitcher and won the Defensive MVP in the East vs. West. After graduating, Pettit went to Lower Columbia College where he pitched his freshmen and sophomore year of college under the direction of Coaches Kelley Smith and Rob Hippi. His first year he pitched 20 innings with 35 strikeouts, 11 walks and 4 hits, finishing with an ERA of 0.98. This past year he pitched 13.67 innings with 21 strikeouts, 9 walks, and 7 hits, finishing with an ERA of 1.98. During his time at Lower Columbia College, the team went as far as becoming NWAACC champions.
"I first saw Drew back in 2007, when he pitched against a summer team I was coaching in Oregon. He was lights out, and when I found out he was going to LCC I knew I had to keep him on the radar. Drew is a great young man, very coachable, great work ethic and has explosive stuff on the hill. I am really excited that Drew committed to us, and it's great that we can add a power pitcher from the left side. With continued improvement, maturity, strength and confidence Drew has the chance to be an absolute shut down type of guy."
