Brandon Williams takes a jump shot for Shelton State during the 2008-09 season.
Former Shelton State Community College (Ala.) guard Brandon
Williams visited the Campbellsville University campus and signed over the weekend
with men's basketball head coach Keith Adkins. He joins point guard Monie
Hudson (University of Evansville) as the second transfer and is the fifth
signee of the year so far.
"He gives us a bonafide scoring threat on the perimeter. You won't find a
better shooter coming out of the junior college ranks this year or last year,"
Adkins said. "He's a physically strong guy that I think is ready for the
Mid-South Conference. He's one of those guys that, if he had (NCAA) Division I
qualifications, he'd be at a low to mid-major Division I school. Bringing in
Monie Hudson as a point guard and adding this guy as a two-guard, we think we're
going to be competitive with anyone we play as far as talented guard combos."
Williams, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound, guard, led Shelton State
to a regular season Alabama Community College Conference (ACCC) championship in
2009 and back-to-back appearances in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament
in 2008 and 2009. He was third in the state for 3-pointers made (74) and
3-point field goal percentage (50.7) during his sophomore year in 2008-09,
while averaging 14 points and three assists per game.
At the end of the year, he was named a Second Team NJCAA All-American, ACCC
First Team All-Conference and selected to the ACCC All-Tournament Team, as the
Bucs finished ranked No. 7 in the NJCAA.
With that success, Williams has high hopes for the Tigers in 2010-11.
"I'm looking forward to playing hard and working toward a championship," said Williams.
"I'm looking forward to playing with Monie. I hear he's a really strong player.
(Campbellsville) had a strong batch last year, and hopefully I can be the piece
they need to take it a little further in the national tournament."
Before Shelton State, Williams was an honorable mention All-State selection at
Buckhorn High School in New Market, Ala., where he averaged 21.2 points per
game and shot 46 percent from 3-point range as a senior in 2006-07. He helped
lead Buckhorn to a Class 5A runner-up trophy as a junior in 2006.
Williams' visit to CU July 23-24 was a reunion for him and his former Shelton
State assistant coach Jeremy Monceaux, who begins his second season on the CU
staff.
"He always encouraged me to take my offensive
game to another level. We worked out after practice together all the time. I'm
glad to be back with Coach Monceaux," said Williams, who sat out the 2009-10 season. "We talked a lot through
the recruiting process. As time went on, I started really considering
(Campbellsville)."
Monceaux said his communication with Williams began not as a recruiter but as a
former coach.
"When you're at a JUCO one of your
secondary jobs, after trying to win and build your team, is to get your kids
better and try to have them take the next step. Through the year, I stayed in
contact with him not only for Campbellsville and our reasons, but also to help
him. I'm very excited to have him back with me and at Campbellsville. Initially
it was just me being a former coach and trying to help him out and that led him
back here," Monceaux said.
In addition to Hudson and Williams, Adkins has added three
true freshmen from the state of Kentucky: Cameron Hall (Glasgow High School), Jeremiah
Johnson (Holmes High School) and Bryton Taylor (Campbellsville High School).
"We have one scholarship left to give. We're sorting through that right now and
hope to have that resolved within the next week or so," Adkins said.
