Calvin Bini speaks with new students during Campbellsville University's L.I.N.C. summer orientation.
Campbellsville University senior defensive back Calvin Bini has been
announced as one of 55 nominees for consideration to be named to the 2010
Allstate America Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team. The
22-man college division team will be announced in September.
Bini, a native of Radcliff, Ky., is a natural choice for the award, as he is a student-athlete that leads by example and service. This is the second award recognizing Bini's service, as he was awarded the Mid-South Conference East Division Champion of Character award in 2009.
"It gives us great pride to have a young man of character
like Calvin in our program," Campbellsville football head coach Perry Thomas said. "Calvin is
one of those rare individuals that takes as much pride in giving back to
society as he does in being a great athlete.
He is a solid leader/mentor in our program. Not only does he make a difference in the
different functions he gets involved with, he also makes a positive difference
with his peers that are his teammates.
We are extremely proud of his growth as a man and his commitment to
making a difference in the lives of others."
The day after Campbellsville's second football game of the 2009 season, Bini joined a handful of teammates and spent the day reading in Sevierville, Tenn., at local schools. He has spent his past two spring breaks on mission trips to Florida to play on the Sports Reach Ministries softball team that ministers in prisons. He has spent the summer serving on campus as a student leader for L.I.N.C.
He was also a member of a discussion panel about CU when the Louisville Urban League
toured campus in July.

Bini's leadership and heart for others has also been recognized by his peers on
campus, as he was asked to give a testimony at the Crazy Love Outreach Night in
April, an event created by CU student-athletes and included former University
of Kentucky coaches and players.
On the field, Bini is making a name for himself in Campbellsville Fighting Tiger football history as a defender, but mainly as a punt returner.
In 2009, he joined current Arena Football League standout William Mulder atop the Tigers' record book for punt returns. He tied Mulder's single-season punt return for a touchdown record (1) and broke the return yards in a season record, with 377 yards of 31 returns. After only one season of play, he is more than halfway from Mulder's career punt return yards record of 665 yards and needs only 20 returns in 2010 to catch Mulder's record for most career returns.
Other athletes from Kentucky schools nominated for the College Division are Unviersity of the Cumberlands offensive lineman Madison McCalmon of Ringold, Ga., and Centre College running back Jonathan Pinque. University of Kentucky quarterback Randall Cobb is nominated for the Football Bowl Subdivision team.
The College Division team represents players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III, and the NAIA.
The Good Works Team was established to represent the "best of the best" among more than 50,000 student-athletes across the nation and honor the distinguished group of college football players who
stand out for the positive influence they have in their communities, stated a press release on the announcement. This year, 112 student-athletes have been nominated for the honor, a record number since the program began in 1992.
