Carlos Wheeler, a top scorer for the Campbellsville University men's
basketball team in 2001-02, has been invited by the New Orleans Hornets to
participate in the NBA Summer League, July 9-16, in Las Vegas.
He and the Hornets will take on the Golden State Warriors Friday, July 9 at 10
p.m. ET on the campus of the University of Nevada - Las Vegas. One of the
biggest match ups of the summer may be when the Hornets meet the Washington Wizards'
summer team and No. 1 draft pick John Wall.
Wheeler has spent the past two seasons with the Utah Flash after being drafted
in the fourth round of the 2008 NBA Development League Draft. He played mostly
as a reserve his first season but turned into a starter for the Atlanta Hawks
and Utah Jazz's minor league team this past season, averaging 12.6 points, 7.3
rebounds and 2.1 assists per game, all while shooting 51 percent from the floor
with 10 double-doubles.
Those numbers helped the New Orleans native catch the eye of Brian Hagen,
director of scouting for the Hornets.
"He's a solid small forward/power forward who has had some excellent years in
the D-League. We've had our eye on him there," Hagen said in a release. "He has
been here in New Orleans recently, spending some time working out. We think
he'll be a good fit."
Joining Wheeler on the New Orleans roster this summer are Hornets veterans
Darren Collison (UCLA) and Marcus Thornton (LSU). Wheeler, 32, is the oldest
player on the roster, which consists mainly of non-drafted free agents fresh
out of college.
While at CU, the 6-foot-8 Wheeler helped lead the Tigers to a 19-14 record,
while shooting 60 percent from the field and averaging 20.5 points, 9.1
rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game. He was named a 2002 First Team All-Conference
selection in Mid-South Conference and a NAIA All-America Honorable Mention.
Following his one season with Campbellsville, Wheeler began his professional
career in Egypt, where he helped win the league championship. He has sense
played in Israel and the Dominican Republic twice, the Philippines, Sweden, Italy,
Uruguay and Argentina. Prior to his two-year stint in Utah, he'd only played
two pro seasons in the United States for the Pennsylvania Valley Dawgs of the USBL
early in his pro career and playing with the Houston Undertakers of the ABA a
few years back.
While he was in Sweden, playing with Plannja Basket, he
helped lead the team to the Swedish League championship in 2006, while
averaging 20.5 points per game. That season led to a few YouTube videos by
fans, including a full highlight reel and a clip of a windmill dunk.
