Porshia Hutcherson set a record in the 400-meter hurdles and qualified for the NCCAA Championships
Campbellsville University women's track and field scored a
fourth-place finish at the Mid-South Conference Championship Saturday at the
University of Rio Grande.
The Lady Tigers picked up 62 points during the second day of competition to
finish with 107 team points and finish behind Shorter College (257), University
of the Cumberlands (159) and Lindsey Wilson College (116). Rio Grande (88),
Bethel College (62) and Georgetown College (51) rounded out the team standings.
Highlights of Saturday's final day for CU included record times for 4x100
relay, 4x400 relay and 400-meter hurdles.
CU was third in the 4x400 relay with Starsha Fant, Toya Canty, Kaitlin Pritchett
and Porshia Hutcherson setting a school record time of 4:07.90. Tiosha Beasley
joined Canty, Pritchett and Hutcherson on the 4x100 team that finish fifth with
a CU record time of 50.61 seconds.
Hutcherson set the school record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:09.63
to qualify for the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Championships
May 6-8 in Marion, Ind. The fourth-place finish picked up five points for CU
and was 3.48 seconds faster than her qualifying time. Kaitlin Pritchett picked
up three points in the event with a sixth-place finish, .54 seconds behind
Hutcherson.
Fant picked up three points individually with a sixth-place finish in the
800-meter run
In distance events, Campbellsville gained 22 points. The first 11 points came
in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as Tawny Vilchis finished third (12:46.02) and
Daisy Perez was fourth (13:27.77). Vilchis led CU in the 5,000-meter run with a
fifth-place finish, as Summer Rines and Daisy Perez finished seventh and
eighth, respectively. Natasha Janes gained two points with a seventh-place
finish in the 1,500-meter run.
Two field events took place Saturday, as Ashley Wilson finished seventh in the
discus, while Beasley and Bonnie Joy Boulware were third and sixth,
respectively, in the triple jump.
During Friday's field events, The Lady Tigers picked up big
second-place finishes from Kotey Crowe in the pole vault and Vilchis in the
javelin to help boost them into fifth place with 45 points, only 14 points out
of the lead.
Crowe vaulted a personal record and
school record of 9 feet, while Vilchis competed in the javelin event for the
first time and threw a school record of 35.05 meters to qualify in the event
for the NCCAA Championships.
Another record-setting throw came in the women's hammer event, as Apryll Wilson
became the first Campbellsville woman to enter the event. She placed sixth with
a throw of 26.19 meters. She was also seventh in the shot put.
Other women's Top 8 finishes were Boulware (4th, pole vault), Beasley (5th,
long jump), Canty (7th, long jump), Crowe (5th, javelin), Rines (6th, 10K),
Kasey Vitkus (8th, 10K) and a fourth-place 4x800-meter relay time of 10:41.74
ran by Fant, Janes, Vitkus and Rines.
Campbellsville will have its team banquet Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Competition will continue May 6-8 at the NCCAA Championships at Taylor University in Marion, Ind.
