Shot put throwers Dake Kerr and Alex Zimmerman picked up nine of Campbellsville University's 26 team points during the first day of the Mid-South Conference Track & Field Championship on Friday in Rio Grande, Ohio.
Campbellsville enters the second day of competition Saturday in fifth place, 19 points behind first-place team University of the Cumberlands.
Kerr set a new personal record with a throw of 13.77 meters in the shot pout to finish second, while Zimmerman finished eighth.
Geovanni Popoca added six points for the Tigers with a third-place finish in the 10K run with a time of 32:59.02. Detrick Briggs and the 4x800-meter relay teams each contributed four points. Briggs was fifth in the high jump, while Qualaun Reed, Dashan Craft, Tyler Nielson and Armando Pina teamed up for a fifth-place finish in the 4x800. Zimmerman's sixth-place finish in the hammer added the other three points for CU.
Following the day's competition, Josh Naimo was honored at the tournament banquet as an Academic All-Conference selection.
University of the Cumberlands leads the field with 57 points, followed by Shorter College (55), Georgetown (48), host University of Rio Grande (46), CU, Lindsey Wilson (18) and Bethel (Tenn.) College (5).
The championship meet concludes Saturday, as Campbellsville is scheduled to compete in all events on the schedule. The day begins with the remaining field events at 10:30 a.m. All events Saturday are finals, as preliminaries for held Friday.
