Sioux City, IA - Campbellsville University's hopes of another individual national champion in wrestling were dashed today when both Zach Flake and Glen Jackson lost in the semi-finals of their respective weight classes at the NAIA National Wrestling Championship.
The Tigers are 14th in the standings as a team after the seccond session on Friday with 43.0 points and four
wrestlers remaining in the tournament, all in the Wrestleback, or consolation, bracket.
125# - James Hicks (SR/Belle Glade, FL)was elminated from the tournament on Friday. Hickslost his first match to top ranked Corey Borges of Montana State-Northern by a 4-1 score. Hicks then defeated Matt Chustz of William Penn by fall at 5:49 . Hicks then was defeated by Forrest Bogue of Great Falls 9-7.
133# - Kaci Payne (SR/Pulaski, VA) lost his first match to John Gerhold, ranked 5th in the class, from Missouri Valley. Payne battled back in the Wrestleback bracket as he defeated Drew Smith of Morningside 2-0 but lost 10-6 to Eli Zuniga of Dickinson State. Zuniga is ranked third nationally and with the loss Payne was eliminated from the tournament.
141# - Flake won his opening match 9-4 over Spencer Griffiths, ranked second in the class from Great Falls, He then defeated Jermaine Wave of McKendree 11-7. Wave was ranked 7th in the class. In his next match, Flake handled Eric Graham of Missouri Valley 13-8. Flake was defeated by Adam Koballa of Notre Dame College by a 3-1 score in the semi-finals. Flake will now wrestle in the semi-finals of the Wrestleback bracket and have a chance for third place.
141# - Kyle Norred (SR/Kennesaw, GA) won his opening match 9-5 over Joseph Jannsen of Southern Oregon but lost in the next round to Chang. Chang won by fall with 4:53 remaining. Norred then lost to 2nd ranked Spencer Griffiths of Great Falls 4-0 and was eliminated from the tournament.
149# - Josh Mason (FR/Franklin, KY) has been eliminated from the tournament. He lost his first round match 5-3 to Brandon Palmer of William Penn and then lost in the Wrestleback 5-1 to Nathan Spencer from Notre Dame College.
157# - Both Campbellsville wrestlers made it to the quarterfinals before losing their first round matches. David Clemens (JR/Dayton, OH) defeated Dan Pray but then lost to Lee Morrison of Menlo 5-2. Clemens was ranked 2nd in the class and Morrison 8th. Clemens the wrestled Melvin Bell of William Penn and won 16-3. He advances into the quarterfinals of the Wrestleback to face D.J. Jackson of Northwestern College.
157# - George Sheppard (FR/Newport News, VA) won his first match 8-7 over Timothy Paige of King College before being pinned at the 0:57 mark by Matt Collum of Missour Baptist. Sheppard then defeated Michael O'hara of Lindenwood 5-2 and will faceJason Bilinksi of Dana College.
165# - Chris Branam ( SR/Bloomington, IN) lost 7-4 to Robert Davis of Menlo. He then lost to John Sumner of Lindenwood 3-1 and was eliminated from the event. Bryan Wells (SO/Virginia Beach, VA) lost to Jimmy Ulrey of Southern Oregon 9-7. He then defeated Pat Banks of Cumberland 13-7 and defeated Elizardo Arismendez of Embry-Riddle 13-9 before losing to Aaron Winning of McKendree 10-2 and was eliminated.
174# - Johnny Sinchok (FR/Akron, OH) won his first round match with a pin at 0:42 over Benjamin Woodburn of York College but lost to Miguel Ponce of Dana 6-5 in the second round. Sinchok got a bye in the Wrestleback and then defeated Jason Appleton of Southern Oregon 8-6 before losing 14-9 to John Wilcox of Oklahoma City.
197# - Glen Jackson (JR/Chesapeake, VA) defeated Alex Calvi of Great Falls 4-3 and then moved into the semis with a 16-4 win over Jeff Cobb of Missouri Valley. He then lost 2-1 to 2nd ranked Andrew Sanchez of McKendree in the semi-finals and is now in the semi-finals of the Wrestleback bracket awaiting an opponent.
285# - Chad Brown (JR/Kernersville, GA) lost in the first round 17-4 to Jesse Ruiz of Menlo. Brown bounced back with a win in the Wrestleback 3-2 over Shawn Meyer of Morningside. He then defeated BJ Stewart of Cumberland 6-4 before being eliminated 8-7 by Dan Moore of McKendree.
The tournament continues through Saturday.
