CU Lady Tigers gather with their championship plaque
Spring break ended early for the Campbellsville University
women's track and field team, but Saturday made it all worthwhile, as CU won
the Kentucky Small College State Championship Invitational at Berea College and
set 11 school records.
"I'm extremely proud of the women's and men's
teams," CU head coach Joe Stockton said. "I told them in our first meeting of
the year that on paper we have a chance to win a few meets on the schedule, but
we were going to have to make some sacrifices to win the Berea College
Invitational."
The CU women beat Lindsey Wilson College by 55 points, as the Lady
Tigers collected 177 points to win the team competition. Individually, Toisha
Beasley, Kotey Crowe, Daisy Perez and two relay teams earned first place
finishes.
Beasley set three school records, as she won the triple jump with a record
10.24 meters and finished second in the long jump with a record jump of 4.94 meters.
Both jumps qualify her for the NCCAA National Championships, which will be held
May 6-8 in Upland, Ind.She also set the school record in the 200-meter
dash with a 28.13 performance.
"Tiosha was
recruited because of her jumping abilities, but she has turned out to be one of
the fastest runners on the team," Stockton said.
Crowe placed first in the pole vault with a jump of 8 feet and was second in
the javelin. Perez led a one-two punch for CU in the 5,000-meter run. She
finished with a time of 21:20.49, followed 16 seconds later by Summer Rines.
Apryll White was another CU athlete to break multiple records. She finished
second in the 100-meter dash with a record of 13.38 to qualify for the NCCAA
National Championships. She also broke the record for the 100-meter hurdles with a
time of 16:51 and was a part of the school record breaking 4x100 relay team
that included Katlin Pritchett, Beasley and Toya Canty. The Lady Tigers
finished second to Lindsey Wilson in the 4x100 with a time of 52.48.
Pritchett, a senior from Clay, Ky., participated in six different events that
contributed to 38 of the Lady Tigers' points. She had personal records in the
100-meter dash and 100-meter hurdles. She also joined Beasley, Canty and
Whitney Stokes to win the 4x200 relay in a CU record time (1:55.75) and joined
Canty, Tawny Vinchis and Starsha Fanta to win the 4x400 with a school record
time of 4.19.04.
"I think if you can stick anyone in six
events and have them finish the meet in good health is a feat in itself, but
Katlin had personal bests in two of the events and was a part of three
school record breaking relay teams. That has to magnify
accomplishments," Stockton said.
The other CU record holder was Ashley Wilson of Russell
Springs, Ky., who finished third in the discus with a record throw of 31.14
meters.
Campbellsville will travel to Hanover, Ind., Saturday for the Hanover
Invitational.
